‘Hidden Figures’ Beats ‘Rogue One,’ Earns No. 1 Spot at the Weekend Box Office

‘Hidden Figures’ is the number ONE movie in America — beating out ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ by about $1 million.

‘Hidden Figures’ earned $22.8 million at 2,471 theaters, according to the final numbers.
via Variety:
Sunday estimates had indicated that “Rogue One” was ahead by less than $200,000. But the comedy-drama “Hidden Figures” performed well ahead of those estimates on Sunday to deny “Rogue One” a fourth consecutive box office crown.
“Hidden Figures,” which follows a group of pioneering African-American women in the early days of the American space program, had been forecast last week to take in between $16 million and $18 million. Taraji P. Henson stars as Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who, along with her colleagues Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae), helps launch astronaut John Glenn into space.
The awards-season contender has a modest $25 million budget. Spencer was up for a Golden Globe in the supporting actress category on Sunday, but lost to Viola Davis (“Fences”). She’s also nominated for an individual and ensemble SAG Award.
Female customers dominated “Hidden Figures” business, comprising 64% of the audience. Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson noted that “Hidden Figures” generated an A+ CinemaScore in all categories.
On Sunday, “Rogue One” performed about in line with projections and finished its fourth weekend with $21.9 million at 4,175 locations, lifting its domestic total past $477 million in its first 24 days. The eighth “Star Wars” movie is now the eighth-largest domestic grosser of all time, trailing “Finding Dory” by less than $10 million.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” had a record-setting weekend at the box office as it took in an estimated $170.1 million

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

Though critics vilified the movie, audiences certainly didn’t.

The much anticipated “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” had a record-setting weekend at the box office as it took in an estimated $170.1 million domestically, according to pro.boxoffice.com.

That’s the biggest opening weekend figure of all time for a pre-summer release.

The movie also broke the record for the the largest pre-summer opening day ($82 million), the largest opening in the month of March (beating “The Hunger Games,” $152 million), largest opening ever for Easter weekend (beating “Furious 7,” $147 million), and the largest opening for the film’s studio, Warner Bros (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” $169 million).

This is a huge success for the studio, specifically, as its coming off busts of blockbuster titles like last year’s “Jupiter Ascending” and “Pan.” But, it also proves that its launch of movies on DC Comics characters (“Suicide Squad” and “Justice League” on deck) can compete with the already successful Marvel characters that have been dominating the box office.

However, “Batman v Superman,” budgeted around $250 million, didn’t get out of the gates cleanly.

Going into the weekend the big news was the almost universal bashing of the film by critics (it currently has a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). But that narrative went away when the film took in $27.7 million in its Thursday preview screenings, the biggest preview day figure ever going into Easter weekend.

The movie then made $82 million on Friday, the biggest pre-summer Friday (beating out last year’s “Furious 7” with $67.4 million).

And overseas the news is also positive. The film has already made over $115 million as of Saturday in 17 territories, according to Deadline. And in China, the film is Warner Bros.’ biggest opening ever with $57.1 million in just three days.

A major reason for the record-breaking figures is because Warner Bros. flooded the film with it playing in 35,000 screens around the world. Something only done for the major summer releases.

The next test for the film will be its staying power. As word of mouth floods on social media, will general audience consensus match how the critics feel, or will repeat viewings begin?

Rounding out the weekend releases, Disney’s “Zootopia” continues to be a hit as it came in second with $23.1 million, now at a total domestic of $240 million. While “My Big Fat Greek Weeding 2” played the counter-program to “Batman v Superman,” attracting females not into the comic book characters with an estimated $18.1 million to land in third.

Zendaya in the new 2017 spiderman reboot!!

Deadline is reporting that Zendaya has landed a“key role” in the 2017Spider-Man reboot, as a character who is currently being referred to as “Michelle”. However, it’s already being speculated that Zendaya – who also played a recurring role on the Disney Channel seriesShake It Up! and has made one-off appearances on such TV shows as Black-ish, in addition to having appeared in Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video – could be playing a well-known character in the Spider-Man mythology and that “Michelle” is just a misnomer. On the other hand, it’s plausible that Zendaya will be playing a tweaked version of the Marvel Comics character Michele Gonzales, a criminal defense lawyer who was Peter Parker’s roommate at one point in theAmazing Spider-Man comics (and who had a somewhat infamous one-night stand with Spidey).

THR‘s Borys Kit is reporting that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures (which are now sharing the Spider-Man franchise film rights) have been “looking to go heavily non-white with the SPIDER-MAN supporting cast.” Some will recall that there was a fan push for Miles Morales to be the version of Spider-Man featured in the MCU, in particular after rumors began to circulate that Marvel Studios waslooking to cast a non-white actor to play the webslinger in Civil Warand the 2017 movie reboot. While that ultimately didn’t happen, it would still make sense for Marvel to push for the Spider-Man reboot to feature a “heavily non-white” supporting cast, as part of the studio’s general initiative to diversify its character roster on the film side of the MCU (see also projects like Black Panther and Captain Marvel being part of the Phase 3 movie slate).

spider man 2017 movie casting zendaya Spider Man Reboot Casts Pop Music Star Zendaya in Key Role

This could mean that Zendaya is playing Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, or another female character of significance to the Spider-Manfranchise (see also: Felicia Hardy a.k.a. Black Cat) in the 2017 movie reboot. Peter Parker’s various love interests have all been white in the previous live-action movies featuring the web-head, so this would be one way to help better distinguish the 2017 Spider-Man film from its predecessors. It would be an appropriate move too, seeing as their race has never been a defining element for Peter Parker’s most famous love interests – something that isn’t always true for Marvel Comics characters (see the recent discussion surrounding the casting of Daniel Rand/Iron Fist). On the other hand, Mary Jane Watson is so well-known for her pale-skinned/red-haired appearance that it suggests Zendaya is more likely playing a different Spider-Man love interest – one who would cause less of a ruckus were they to be “race-swapped,” that is (see Felicia Hardy, for example).

With all that being said, it’s worth re-emphasizing: Zendaya’s role in the Spider-Man reboot is open to speculation for the time being, as she could just as well be a “tweaked” version of the Michele Gonzales character (Zendaya herself is biracial) as she could be a different version of Felicia Hardy or someone else altogether. Either way, her casting in the movie further signals that Marvel and Sony are taking steps to distinguish the latest big screen iteration of theSpider-Man movie series from its predecessors (the Sam Raimi-helmed trilogy and the Amazing Spider-Man movies), in more ways than one………our question is……HOW MANY FUCKING TIMES ARE THEY GONNA REBOOT FUCKING SPIDERMAN WIT THE SAME DAMN STORY! UGH TIRED OF IT.
